The RV industry has spent decades perfecting what happens before the sale. New models. New features. Better retail experiences. More ways to get customers excited about ownership.
But what happens after the keys change hands?
That question was at the center of Happy Camper CEO and Chief Camper Dom Bookman and Co-Founder and CIO Scott Degnan’s recent appearance on Capitol Talk from RVBusiness, where they joined Publisher and Executive Editor Rick Kessler and Senior Editor Sherman Goldenberg for a conversation about the technology, infrastructure, and customer experience shaping the next chapter of RV ownership.
A big thank you to Rick, Sherm, and the entire RVBusiness team for having Happy Camper back and giving us the opportunity to share more about where we’ve been, what we’re building, and where we believe the industry can go next.
The Next Big RV Innovation May Happen After the Sale
During the conversation, the group discusses how much of the RV industry has historically been built around getting customers into units, while the post-sale experience remains far more fragmented.
When an owner has a question, needs service, or ends up stranded on the side of the road, finding the right help can mean navigating between a dealer, OEM, and outside providers. Scott highlighted that disconnect as one reason Happy Camper was created in the first place.
The opportunity now is bigger than improving any one service. It is creating an ownership experience in which those services actually work together.
Dom describes Happy Camper’s broader vision as building an operating system for RV ownership: infrastructure that helps connect campers, dealers, and OEMs so the customer has a clearer path forward when something happens.
From Smart Roadside to a More Connected Ownership Experience
Smart Roadside was Happy Camper’s first major step toward that vision.
During the interview, Scott points to a simple expectation consumers already have in nearly every other part of their lives: if you can watch an Uber arrive or track a food delivery to your door, why shouldn’t an RV owner be able to see when roadside assistance is coming?
That kind of visibility can turn uncertainty into reassurance when owners need it most.
Now, Happy Camper is taking the same thinking further with Care Center, a web-based experience designed to make getting RV help simpler from the start. Owners can enter basic information such as a phone number or VIN and begin the support process without downloading another app.
Behind the scenes, Happy Camper can help direct the issue toward the right dealer, OEM or support workflow. The goal is not more technology for technology’s sake. It is fewer dead ends for the owner.
Better Connections Create Better Intelligence
The conversation also explores what happens when those customer touchpoints no longer live in isolation.
Dom highlights how connected ownership and service data can help OEMs better understand customer sentiment, recurring issues, and what is actually happening throughout the ownership lifecycle. Happy Camper is also developing VIN Intelligence, with a longer-term vision of creating a more complete picture of an RV’s history from its original purchase through future ownership.
For dealers, those connections can create opportunities well beyond resolving a single service issue. Staying connected to owners can mean bringing them back for service, protection products, and eventually their next RV.
In other words, better customer support is not separate from better business. It can become part of how the industry builds longer, stronger customer relationships.
